Small Ways to Make a House Feel Like Home

Small Ways to Make a House Feel Like Home

A house and a home are not the same thing, and most of us know the difference the second we walk through the door of each. A house (or apartment) is simply walls and square footage. A home has a feeling to it, and that feeling is usually built from small details rather than one big overhaul.

Light is one of the easiest places to start. Swapping a harsh overhead bulb for a warm lamp in the evening changes the entire mood of a room without spending money on decor.

Texture matters more than people think. A soft, plush throw blanket on the couch, a rug that feels good under bare feet, fresh flowers or plants that draw the eye. Clean rooms and floors. Family photos. These are quiet signals that someone lives there and enjoys the space they dwell in.

Sound counts too. Music playing low in the kitchen, or even just the windows cracked to let outside noise in, can soften a space.

And then there is scent, which might be the fastest of all of these to change how a room feels. It is the first sense that greets you at the door, often before you have even registered what you are looking at.

None of this requires a full home makeover. Tending a home is mostly made up of small, repeated choices, and that idea is the whole heart behind Soul of a Home.
