What You're Bringing Home
Do your candles or wax melts contain any dyes or synthetic colorants?
No synthetic dyes are added to my candles. The natural creamy color you see comes from the coconut soy wax itself, no artificial colorants needed.
What are phthalates, and are your products free of them?
Phthalates (pronounced THAL-ates) are synthetic chemicals used to add flexibility to plastics and as solvents in many fragrances and cosmetics. Certain phthalates have been linked to respiratory irritation and hormonal disruption in research studies. Every Soul of a Home product is 100% phthalate-free.
For further reading, the EPA provides consumer resources on phthalates at epa.gov.
What are the wicks made from?
All wicks are natural cotton, completely free of lead and zinc. No metal-core wicks are ever used.
What type of wax do you use in your candles and wax melts?
I use a premium coconut soy wax blend, a combination of natural coconut wax and soy wax that's sourced right here in the U.S. I care about where every ingredient comes from, and this blend is 100% natural, vegan, and free of petroleum-based additives.
Why coconut soy wax instead of plain soy or paraffin?
The coconut soy blend gives you the best of both worlds. Coconut wax has an exceptionally clean burn, excellent fragrance throw, and a beautiful creamy appearance. Combined with soy wax, the blend burns slowly and evenly, holds fragrance well, and produces minimal soot. Paraffin wax, the most common candle wax, is a petroleum by-product known to release irritants that can affect air quality and trigger respiratory sensitivities. I chose a better option.
Personal note: I, along with several family members and friends, have respiratory sensitivities to paraffin products, which made a clean, natural alternative a personal priority from day one.
Is coconut soy wax better for the environment?
Yes. Both coconut and soy are renewable, plant-based crops. Coconut wax in particular is one of the most sustainable wax options available, coconut trees produce fruit for decades and require no deforestation. Soy wax is biodegradable and domestically sourced. Together, they make a wax blend you can feel good about bringing into your home.
Are your products cruelty-free and vegan?
Absolutely. All Soul of a Home products are 100% vegan and cruelty-free. No animal testing, no animal by-products of any kind, including no beeswax.
Are your fragrances safe?
Yes. All fragrances used in Soul of a Home products are phthalate-free and infused with essential oils. I select fragrance oils formulated to meet industry safety standards, and each candle is formulated within recommended usage guidelines for its format.
What's in your room + linen mists?
I use a simple, clean base: SD Alcohol 40B, distilled water, propylene glycol, methyl glucose ether, and glycerin, plus phthalate-free fragrance oil infused with essential oils. Every ingredient is cosmetic-grade and safe for fabric and air contact.
Are your mist base ingredients safe?
Yes. Every ingredient in my mist base is recognized as safe for cosmetic use by industry safety bodies, and none are on restricted or “ingredient of concern” lists. I don't use anything harsh or unnecessary, just what it takes to carry the fragrance well and let it last.
Is the alcohol in your mists harmful, and what is SD Alcohol 40B?
No, it's denatured ethanol (the same type of alcohol used in most fine fragrance and linen spray products), not a harsh chemical. “SD Alcohol 40B” stands for “Specially Denatured Alcohol, formula 40B” - simply ethanol (grain alcohol) with a small amount of denaturant added so it's undrinkable, a standard requirement for alcohol sold for non-beverage use. It's what allows the scent to disperse evenly and dry clean on fabric without leaving residue or oily spots.
Candle Care & Safety
How do I get the best burn from my candle?
For the best experience:
- Allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges on the first burn, this prevents tunneling.
- Keep the wick trimmed to 1/4 inch before each burn.
- Burn for no more than 4 hours at a time.
- Keep away from drafts, children, and pets.
How long will my candle or wax melt last?
Burn times vary:
- Artisan Jar: ~35-40 hours
- Luxury Tumbler: ~55-60 hours
- Wax Melt Cube: ~8-12 hours.
Actual burn time can vary depending on how you burn and care for your candle, so following the burn tips above will help you get the most out of every one!
Why is the first burn so important?
Candle wax has a “memory.” If you extinguish the candle before the melt pool reaches the edges of the jar, it will continue to tunnel down that same path on future burns, wasting wax and reducing scent throw. A full melt pool on the first burn sets the candle up for even burning throughout its life.
When should I stop burning my candle?
Stop burning when approximately 1/4 - 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel. Burning below this point can overheat the container.
Can I reuse the candle containers?
Yes! Once your candle is finished, remove any remaining wax residue with warm soapy water and the vessel is ready to be repurposed. Soul of a Home vessels are intended to be beautiful and reusable.
